India ranks 2nd in the list of countries from where most students opt for overseas education, losing the first spot to China. USA, UK, Canada, China as well as more recently, Australia and several EU countries are the places most Indian students travel to.
The UNESCO Institute of Statistics published data in 2016 which stated that more than 300 thousand Indian students were studying overseas in 2016 compared to a meager 66 thousand in the year 2000. That meant an annual growth rate of 22% from 2000 to 2016.
The growing desire of students to achieve global education and the ability of such foreign countries to provide the required knowledge and environment are some of the prime reasons for such a high growth in the count. USA, Australia, and the UK are the three top countries where most Indian students travel.
However, it will be wrong to say that students only move out of India as India also hosts more than 47 thousand International students as of 2018. Students from Africa, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan comprise most of the international student population in India. As per Education Ministry Data, Nepal sends the most number of students to India.
Most International students have stated promising quality education and relatively reasonable college fees as the major cause of choosing India for higher studies. Prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, the University of Delhi, and the University of Calcutta host the most number of foreign nationals.
The diversified population in India helps international students to learn about various cultures and ethnicities. A completely different pedagogical method used to teach in India also provides them a chance of learning by applying various techniques. A competitive environment also gives the students the incentive to work harder, thus helping them to secure their future.
